Biosecurity Waste Supervisor

More about this role:

 

As a Biosecurity Waste Supervisor, you will oversee the management of biosecurity and food-related waste within our catering operations. Your primary responsibility is to ensure all waste handling, treatment, and disposal activities meet rigorous compliance with environmental, public health, and quarantine regulations.

This is a hands-on supervisory role that involves leading teams, conducting inspections, coordinating with internal departments and external contractors, and implementing training and continuous improvement initiatives.

 

In a nutshell, your main responsibilities are:

  • Implement and enforce dnata’s biosecurity protocols for waste handling and disposal
  • Maintain strict compliance with legislation across food safety, biohazard, quarantine, and environmental health
  • Supervise waste collection, segregation, transport, treatment, and secure storage procedures
  • Conduct risk assessments and control measures to prevent contamination or pest spread
  • Collaborate with operations teams, waste contractors, and regulatory bodies
  • Monitor facility compliance through inspections and internal audits
  • Provide staff training on biosecurity procedures, spill kits, segregation practices, and proper PPE usage
  • Manage emergency response procedures related to spills or contamination
  • Prepare and present detailed reports on biosecurity performance and improvements

Areas of Focus

Waste Collection & Storage

  • Train and educate staff on correct handling of galley waste, including bins and carts
  • Oversee cleaning, labelling, and compliance of all biosecurity waste containers

Waste Transport

  • Audit vehicles and processes for secure, sealed, and compliant waste transport
  • Ensure adherence to approved transport routes and spill response procedures

Waste Separation & Compliance

  • Monitor unloading practices and hygiene standards in biosecurity waste zones
  • Ensure accurate documentation and record-keeping of waste movements

What do you need to be successful in securing this role?

  • Certificate III or IV in Waste Management, Environmental Services, or a related field (or equivalent experience)
  • Biosecurity or Environmental Compliance Training (preferred)
  • First Aid and Spill Response certification (desirable)
  • Minimum 2–3 years’ experience in waste management, environmental health, or biosecurity operations
  • Proven experience supervising teams and overseeing compliance in a regulated environment
  • Experience in handling and transporting regulated waste, preferably in a quarantine setting
  • Strong knowledge of national biosecurity waste regulations and waste handling standards
  • Demonstrated team supervision skills
  • Excellent communication and training delivery abilities
  • Sound judgment in incident response and problem-solving
  • High attention to detail and strong record-keeping skills
  • Understanding of workplace health and safety (WHS/OHS) principles
  • Familiarity with Hazardous Waste (Regulation of Exports and Imports) Act (if applicable)
  • Commitment to environmental sustainability and biosecurity risk mitigation
